Thousands of years of Indian history with
Ayurvedic Medicine, and millions of people TODAY suggest that the pain and
suffering from arthritis and rheumatism has been solved in India. What is
not much appreciated in the Western World is that Ayurvedic is the most used
medical system on the planet. and for many countries emerging out of a third
world status, with today's modern knowledge, Ayurvedic medicine seems far more
attractive than the drug-centered, costly allopathic medicine of the West.

Ayurvedic is pronounced: I your ved ic , , , , AY ur ved ic.
Kochi, Nov 3, 2002. (UNI): India has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with
Russia on collaboration in the field of Ayurveda teaching, treatment and research as part of the country's efforts at propagating India's traditional systems of medicine abroad.
According to Malati Sinha, Union Health Secretary, department of Indian systems of medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H), Panchkarma and Kshar Sutra were also in the process of being recognised by Russia while Hungary had recognised 40 Ayurvedic drugs and the medical schools in the USA wanted to introduce an Ayurvedic module in their medical schools, she said. The Ayurvedic approach to health contrasts
starkly with the Western approach. The Western approach is running further
into bankruptcy -- not JUST because health care is soon to be some 17% of the
Gross Domestic Product, and rising, but more importantly it is based on a false
premise of using a drug to suppress a symptom instead of helping the body regain
a state of harmony where disease cannot exist. Click here

the antithesis of Ayurvedic Medicine. Click on the image for an article by

The new question that is gaining momentum all over the
health-starved world is, “Can nutrition cure?” The normal thought that occurs
to any mind when one thinks of a disease is that it is essential to have a drug
or a medicine for the cure.
On the left, for instance is a drawing of "white willow bark" which can be chewed, just as it is picked off the tree, to give essentially the same benefit of "aspirin" in helping to handle pain and fever. Thus it is NOT automatic that something, such as a plant, that "grows" is food, or good for the body. But it is also true that anything used as "food" usually has, at least, an origin as something alive -- no matter how much it may have been chemically processed.
Generally it is safe to say that the body does not, inherently need or use "poison." Yet virtually all drugs are designed around the concept that some germ or some part of the body needs to be killed or to be suppressed. Drugs kill and suppress living parts of the body.
On the other hand, the body DOES need, inherently, foods,
including vitamins, minerals and other nutrients -- it needs these to continue
living.
When the body is sick it is often caused by taking toxic things (in drugs or "bad" food) or is caused by a shortage of "good" foods. Toxic substances are often removed from the body by simply discontinuing to take them, and allowing the accumulation to be naturally expelled from the body. Sometimes the body needs help, such as some detoxification program. Detoxification, generally, is NOT done with more toxins. For the most effective detoxification program I know, click here. I, personally, did this program years ago.
Ayurvedic medicine uses herbs that are basically foods, but the ancients observed, over thousands of years, which of these plants, in what dosages, often very small, could provide nutrition for which the body was lacking. Some of these herbs assist, also, in detoxification. Generally Ayurvedic medicines are not considered "drugs" and are very safe to take.
While
drugs are often used in the Western world to treat the pain of arthritis, they
all have warnings and adverse side effects.
Celebrex,
Vioxx,
Bextra,
Arava,
Pennsaid, Mobic, Enbrel, Remicade,
Imuran,
Humira,
Prexige,
Rituximab and others. (Pause your mouse
over these drugs to read the warning.) Generally the drugs that are newest
have not shown many
adverse side effects. But, after any of these have been on the market for a few years,
the deaths and serious warnings start to accumulate. News like in the box
below is common as experience grows and warnings must be "updated".
The above links take you to an official "Pain Study" web site with hundreds of pages of official and other information about dozens of different pain drugs -- both prescription and non-prescription.
Last year, Enbrel's labeling was updated to include warnings about the possibility of central nervous system disorders and pancytopenia, a drop in the body's number of red and white blood cells. (source)

The word "cure" itself is not well defined either medically or technically and often the Western treatment talks of "control" (meaning suppression) and not cure. In the contemporary medical world, "cure" is explained and understood as the apparent diminution or removal of symptoms, which often results in transformation of one set of symptoms to another, shifting in nature and location. Alternately this apparent diminution or removal is established not by dealing with the cause, but only by reducing or removing the capacity of the patient to perceive these symptoms, or, altering the physical manifestation of these symptoms. Thus the cure here is illusory and not real.
The above is a philosophy of care, not a chemical formula for
care. The above paragraphs are developed much further
HERE -- where the inventor of the Ayurvedic Herbal MSM system explains the
Ayurvedic concept of health care.
The exact herbal ingredients for solving the pain of arthritis and rheumatism are well known to students of Sanskrit and Ayurvedic Medicine. Yet modern life styles, particularly in the Western World, and increasingly in India, block some of these ingredients from reaching the areas of need.
Also, and very unfortunately, many of those who should know better, in India, are taking the Ayurvedic concepts and mixing them with Western drug concepts so that they hardly bear any resemblance to the true Ayurvedic remedy. For instance, the Ayurvedic approach considers that the herbs used are foods, not drugs. A food is "eaten," it is not "swallowed" without tasting. THIS herbal MSM is designed to be tasted. There is nothing to "chew" but this herbal MSM is intended to be taken in the mouth, mixed with your own saliva and held in the mouth for a short time -- then swallowed -- it is as if you were sipping tea. Click here for more on that.

Numerous forms of
arthritis exist, but the most common two are osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid
arthritis. These conditions can effect the body's movable joints in the
knees, wrists, elbows, fingers, toes, hips, and shoulders as well as the
bones of the spine on the neck and back.
cartilage that covers then end of these bones, the bones
within the joint normally glide smoothly past one another. If anything goes
wrong with any of these parts of a joint, arthritis can result. The swelling
and deformity that takes place in arthritic joints can result from the
thickening of the membrane, the fluid, enlargement of the bones, or some
combination of these factors.

you're left with worn surfaces. As a result the
joints become stiff and painful. The joints make popping, clinking and
banging noises.
Rheumatoid arthritis involves inflammation and swelling of the joints
rather than a wearing away of the cartilage. It is an autoimmune disease
where the body's immune system reacts against itself and the fluid that
lubricates the joints become inflamed. The cartilage and tissues in and
around the joints are damaged or destroyed. Often the bones are destroyed as
well. The body replaces this damaged tissue with scar tissue, causing the
normal spaces within the joints to become narrow and the bones to fuse
together. Rheumatoid arthritis affects all the body's joints. Joints
affected make noises like crinkling cellophane.
Gout, is an example of an acute form of inflammatory arthritis. Acute
means something that comes on suddenly and is of limited duration. Deposits
of crystallized uric acid form in the joint causing swelling, redness and a
sensation of heat and extreme pain. It usually affects the big toe, but
other joints may be affected as well.
A person can have so much wear and tear on the
joint that nothing will help any further, other than replacement.
Click Here for a very full description of a complete knee replacement.
You would think that, of all people, Karl Loren and his wife, Jean Ross, would have looked for and found a "solution" to arthritis. I, Karl, have looked! Perhaps I should have been smarter, earlier, but in any event Jean Ross is scheduled for a complete knee replacement and I, Karl, will be getting a hip replacement.
We both had good success in handling arthritis pain with plain MSM, then it seemed that the pain returned, despite how much plain MSM we took.
We find that the herbal MSM does a much better job than plain MSM, but you finally have to face the fact that when bone is rubbing on bone, there will be pain that nothing will handle except drugs. We both refused to take drugs, other than temporary MSAIDs, and are now both scheduled for surgery.
There now comes along a product of Western Technology -- Methyl Sulfonyl Methane, MSM -- a natural, non-drug, product that enhances any other nutrient by carrying that nutrient to the areas of need and helping that nutrient penetrate into spaces and cells where it becomes effective.
Thus, MSM, itself, is a well-known and accepted substance for relieving the pain of arthritis, and in India these Ayurvedic ingredients are THE usual remedy by themselves.
Now, in a proprietary manufacturing process these two marvels are combined into a support system that far exceeds the results of either one alone, and also exceeds, certainly in safety, and even in effectiveness, any of the current drugs used for this situation.
The marriage of Ayurvedic and Western technology is now available in "Supportt -- Arthritis."
A 'proprietary manufacturing process' is, as the phrase suggests, secret. Click HERE or on the image to get a full description of how one of the raw materials is made -- a raw material used to manufacture MSM, itself.Extensive tests were done with the Supportt -- Arthritis formula using two very different technologies of production.
One method was to simply blend in the actual herbs with MSM -- a method that would be widely used already in India.
The second method, proprietary, was to 'process' these herbs with a 'cold extraction and concentration' procedure which was invented and developed at Emmessar Biotech & Nutrition, Ltd., Mumbai, India. There is more on this, written directly and personally by Dr. Ayyangar, the founder of the company in India that created this herbal MSM.
Anatomy determines the "structural" health ---- and physiology determines the "functional" health of the body, even though both are closely interconnected. Harmonious Therapeutic Nutrition (Ayurvedic Herbs in Herbal-MSM) caters to both structural and functional health, thus contributing to overall enduring health. (source)
This 'cold extract' was then 'blended' with the MSM
in a much more complex way than simple 'mixing.'
The image on the left is from one of the factory buildings owned by Dr. Ayyangar, the creator of the herbal MSM. Click here to get more pictures of that factory, and the people.
The result was, by test trials, a result very different from the first method mentioned.
Thus, the simple combination of the listed herbs with MSM will produce favorable results, but the use of the proprietary technology demonstrated such better results as to speed of action and very favorable results with smaller amounts of the material than needed for the more simple technology.
Supportt -- Arthritis is the first in a series of Supportt formulas -- each one combining the ancient wisdom of Ayurvedic Medicine with the Western Technology of a "penetrant and carrier" -- MSM.
The Ayurveda uses the common, and uncommon, plants
that grow in India and Asia. While they may be "plants" in a general
sense, they become "herbs" when their special properties are discovered.
Those herbs are grown, harvested, processed and stored in so many ways that it is difficult to know where you stand. The Ayurveda describes some, only, of the processes by which an herb should be prepared for use.
The herb preparation is complex indeed.
But, once there is a standard of preparation these herbs have moved out of the philosophical validation, in the Ayurveda, to yet another Western technology -- the scientific study. The herbs used in Supportt -- Arthritis each have dozens of scientific studies -- done against Western principals of science.
So, there is yet another marriage here -- we not
only have the combination of the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and the penetrant
and carrier -- MSM. We have, also, the claims of a 5,000 year old source
(Ayurveda) tested by modern Western Science. It may be comforting to the
Westerner to find that HIS science validates the Ayurveda. It is not
comforting, but a simple acknowledgment to the man in India that Western science
agrees with the Ayurveda.
For example:
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper is to review the literature regarding Withania somnifera (ashwagandha, WS) a commonly used herb in Ayurvedic medicine. Specifically, the literature was reviewed for articles pertaining to chemical properties, therapeutic benefits, and toxicity.
DESIGN: This review is in a narrative format and consists of all publications relevant to ashwagandha that were identified by the authors through a systematic search of major computerized medical databases; no statistical pooling of results or evaluation of the quality of the studies was performed due to the widely different methods employed by each study.
RESULTS: Studies indicate ashwagandha possesses anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antistress, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, hemopoietic, and rejuvenating properties. It also appears to exert a positive influence on the endocrine, cardiopulmonary, and central nervous systems.
The mechanisms of action for these properties are not fully understood.
Toxicity studies reveal that ashwagandha appears to be a safe compound.
CONCLUSION: Preliminary studies have found various constituents of ashwagandha exhibit a variety of therapeutic effects with little or no associated toxicity. These results are very encouraging and indicate this herb should be studied more extensively to confirm these results and reveal other potential therapeutic effects. Clinical trials using ashwagandha for a variety of conditions should also be conducted. (source)
Here is a study that specifically shows Ashwagandha as being effective in reducing the pain of arthritis.
Treatment of osteoarthritis with a herbomineral formulation: a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study.
Kulkarni RR, Patki PS, Jog VP, Gandage SG, Patwardhan B.
Bryamjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College, University of Poona, Pune, India.
The clinical efficacy of a herbomineral formulation containing roots of Withania somnifera, the stem of Boswellia serrata, rhizomes of Curcuma longa and a zinc complex (Articulin-F), was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, cross-over study in patients with osteoarthritis. After a one-month single blind run-in period, 42 patients with osteoarthritis were randomly allocated to receive either a drug treatment or a matching placebo for a period of three months.
After a 15-day wash-out period the patients were transferred to the other treatment for a further period of three months.
Clinical efficacy was evaluated every fortnight on the basis of severity of pain, morning stiffness, Ritchie articular index, joint score, disability score and grip strength.
Other parameters like erythrocyte sedimentation rate and radiological examination were carried out on a monthly basis.
Treatment with the herbomineral formulation produced a significant drop in severity of pain (P less than 0.001) and disability score (P less than 0.05). Radiological assessment, however, did not show any significant changes in both the groups. Side effects observed with this formulation did not necessitate withdrawal of treatment. (source)
The two studies quoted above are shown, in abstract form, on this web site. In addition to such references within the 40 pages on just one of the herbs in this product are more references, such as:
Withaferin A exhibits fairly potent anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory activities. It
was found to suppress arthritic syndrome without any toxic effect. Unlike hydrocortisone-treated animals which lost weight, the animals treated with withaferin A showed gain in weight in arthritic syndrome. It is interesting that withaferin A seems to be more potent than hydrocortisone in adjuvant-induced arthritis in rats, a close experimental approximation to human rheumatoid arthritis. In its oedema-inhibiting activity, the compound gave a good dose-response in the dose-range of 12-25 mg./kg. body-wt. of albino rats intraperitoneally and a single dose had a good duration of action, as it could effectively suppress the inflammation after four hours of its administration. The effect of the withanoloide in suppressing granulation-tissue formation appeared to be similar to that of hydrocortisone. The locally induced graft (lymphocytes)-versus-host reaction in chicks was strongly inhibited by withaferin A (Sethi et al., Indian J Pharmacol.,1970, 2, 165; Chem. Abstr.,1973, 79, 142880) (source)
Studies like these are usually written in very technical language, but you can get the idea here that a considerable amount of scientific study has been done with this and other herbs. Since the Indian tradition of Ayurveda has existed for more than 5,000 years, there is not only the history of usage of various herbs for specific situations, but a long-standing opportunity to do a scientific study of the ancient claims. It is startling to find that this ancient wisdom, going back 5,000 years, is so fully validated by modern scientific methods.
Dozens of other studies are on this web site, including many that mention that Ashwagandha specifically relieves the pain of arthritis and rheumatism. If the text devoted to Ashwagandha, alone, is downloaded and printed (which you are encouraged to do) it requires 40 pages of paper to print all that material for this one herb. Three other herbs are also described in detail, and included in this Supportt -- Arthritis formula.
On these pages you will find links to literally hundreds of scientific studies of individual herbs -- herbs found in the Ayurveda and tested in the West. These tests did not use the even more modern technology of MSM --- the penetrant and carrier.
Some
years ago Dr. Ayyangar designed a special herbal MSM blend to treat spider
bites, particularly those found in Australia. There is an extensive
coverage of this subject on this web site. A good starting page is
HERE.
This matter came up when someone wrote to Karl about using Herbal MSM for a spider bite. Her message, and Karl's comments are HERE.
After some thought on this, we have concluded that ANY of the Herbal MSM formulas would be MORE effective in treating spider bites than plain MSM. Even plain MSM could be all the treatment that is needed -- applying the MSM externally, as a "poultice" and also taking it internally. Using the Arthritis form of Herbal MSM would be more effective than using plain MSM. This same advice has now been given, same link, to someone who just had a ruptured appendix!
Click here for a description of how many different forms of an herb actually exist -- and reference to the variety of extraction methods. Near the bottom of this page is a link to each of the four major Ayurvedic herbs used in Supportt -- Arthritis.
Click here for a description of how MSM penetrates through the skin, through the body, and even into and through cell membranes. This description includes how MSM not only penetrates but carries other substances along with it. There are other substances which are either penetrants, or carriers, but not many that do both, and very few which are as effective and safe as Methyl Sulfonyl Methane -- MSM.
Click Here for the origin and tradition of Ayurvedic Medicine -- and how to think about this widely popular concept compared with the chemical medicine of the Western world.
Arthritis is a big health problem, costing Americans billions of dollars per year for drugs that harm.
- In the United States, over 40 million people have some type of arthritis2
- One in ten are estimated to have osteoarthritis1
- Twenty million Americans suffer from osteoarthirits2
- One of the three most commonly reported chronic conditions in Canada1
- 21.1% of women suffer from arthritis while 15.7% of men have the disease1
- The likelihood of incidence increases with age1
- 5% of those between 16 and 44 report having the disease
- 21% of those between 45 and 64 report having the disease
- 38% of those over 65 report having the disease
- Nearly 50% of Americans over 65 years of age have some form of arthritis2
- At any time, approximately one-third of all US adults are affected by objective joint pain, swelling, or limitation of motion3
- By 2020, it is estimated that 60 million Americans, or 20% of the population, will have some form of arthrits2 (Source)
Westerners are not
familiar with the Ayurvedic principle that the treatment substance is a
'plant' and not a drug. As a 'plant' it is also a special form of food. It
is not intended to be swallowed as you would swallow a pill. Rather you
should approach any Ayurvedic remedy as something you should TASTE, mix with
your saliva, as you would food, and hold in your mouth so that the sensitive
tissues in the mouth can absorb this material.
Click here for a very detailed and scientific explanation of why the
herbal MSM should be tasted and mixed with saliva -- an explanation that is
sadly missing from Western knowledge.Click here for even more detailed instructions on how to take this Herbal MSM.
saliva and hold it in the mouth for a short while before
swallowing.
First, the capsules
are used in a relatively small quantity -- at a relatively low price. The
idea is for someone to purchase this smaller bottle to see how they regard the
contents of the capsule when the capsule is pulled open and the contents put
on the tongue.
If you find that the results of use of Support -- Arthritis meets your expectations, you can use up your small bottle of capsules and then get your next batch in the larger jar of loose powdered Ayurvedic Herbal MSM. You can then use a teaspoon to take the powder from the jar. We recommend up to three teaspoons per day, as needed.

Tests have been conducted and there is no bacterial growth in this product, even when stored in an open container for six months in a humid area. The MSM is, itself, slightly acidic in nature and is therefore a natural preservative. No preservatives are added.
